This is a hands-on operational leadership role covering steam, water, compressed air, effluent treatment and energy systems.

You don’t necessarily need to already be a Utilities Supervisor. We’re equally interested in hearing from experienced utilities, plant, process, boiler house or engineering professionals who understand industrial operations and are ready to take the next step.

The role

You’ll oversee the day-to-day operation of the site’s utilities, ensuring the services needed to keep production running are safe, reliable and efficient.

You’ll supervise and support the utilities team, work closely with Engineering and Maintenance and play an active role in improving reliability, energy efficiency and environmental performance.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Overseeing the safe and efficient operation of site utilities including steam generation, condensate recovery, compressed air, water treatment and effluent systems
• Monitoring plant performance and responding to operational issues and breakdowns
• Supervising and supporting utilities employees and contractors
• Allocating work and managing day-to-day operational priorities
• Working closely with Engineering and Maintenance on planned maintenance, inspections and repairs
• Coordinating utility shutdown and start-up activities
• Ensuring statutory inspections and compliance requirements are completed
• Monitoring energy and utility consumption and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs
• Supporting environmental, sustainability and carbon-reduction initiatives
• Investigating operational problems and contributing to root cause analysis
• Leading improvement projects around safety, reliability and efficiency
• Maintaining accurate operational records and performance information
• Supporting risk assessments, permit-to-work systems and safe working practices

Who would suit this role?

We’re looking for someone with practical experience gained within a manufacturing, process, utilities, power generation or similar industrial environment.

You might currently be working as a:

Utilities Engineer | Utilities Team Leader | Plant Supervisor | Process Supervisor | Boiler House Supervisor | Energy Centre Operator | Shift Supervisor | Maintenance Supervisor | Utilities Operator

We’re also very interested in experienced plant or utilities operators who have built up strong technical knowledge and are ready to take their first formal step into supervision.

You’ll ideally have experience of some of the following:

• Steam and boiler systems
• Compressed air
• Pumps and associated plant
• Water treatment
• Effluent treatment
• Energy systems
• Continuous process plant

You don’t need experience across every one of these areas. A strong industrial background, practical technical knowledge and the ability to learn are more important.

What we’re looking for

You’ll need to be safety-focused, practical and comfortable taking ownership when something isn’t running as it should.

You’ll also need:

• Experience within an industrial, manufacturing or process environment
• A good understanding of plant or utility systems
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Good organisational and communication skills
• The confidence to coordinate employees, contractors and operational priorities
• A proactive approach to safety and continuous improvement
• The ability to work effectively across Production, Engineering, Maintenance, Environmental and H&S teams

Previous supervisory experience would be useful, but isn’t essential if you’re ready to make that next step.

Experience of boiler or steam systems, energy management, environmental compliance or continuous manufacturing would be advantageous, as would IOSH Managing Safely or a Mechanical, Electrical, Process or Chemical Engineering qualification.
